Homework Policy

Students can expect an average of 40 minutes of homework a night (Monday-Thursday).  It will consist of:

  • Math:
Timed Drill:  This is to improve your child's accuracy in quickly recalling their multiplication/division facts.  It is important that your child has their facts mastered so that they can quickly apply them to a variety of concepts throughout the year.  You can time your child to see how long it takes them to complete the set of facts OR you can time them for two minutes to see how many problems they can complete in that time frame.  This will allow your child to work towards improving their speed on a daily basis.  Just make sure to write the time on their drill sheet so I know which options you chose.

Excel: This is to help reinforce learned skills throughout the school year.  Students are to complete the right hand side of their Excel worksheet and then check their answers.  To do so, they will add up the answers to all of the problems in that box and it should total the number in the box in the right hand corner.

  • Reading:
Students will read each night for an average of 20 minutes.  Once they have completed their reading, they will write a 30-word summary about what they read.  Please be aware of your child reading a book that is "too easy" or "too hard" for them.  They won't be able to improve their reading abilities if they are having difficulty understanding their book or are flying through it because it's not challenging them.  Also, make sure to ask your child about the 5-Finger Rule to help them choose a book that is appropriate to their reading level.
